What do I need to pack for my trip?
It can be a challenge to know what to travel with, especially when setting off to an unexplored destination. While some people are able to be ruthless in bringing the bare minimum, others prefer to carry familiar creature comforts.
Here we’ll expand a little on our list of packing essentials and answers to our most frequently asked questions. We’re just an email away if you need any more help or advice on what to bring and whether to pack the kitchen sink (no).
Luggage
In this part of the world, we suggest using a rugged, soft-sided duffle bag. Packing cubes or small drawstring bags are useful to divide the contents and will help you find what you need with ease. They’re also useful for keeping dirty or wet gear separate.
We really like Patagonia’s Black Hole duffles and Ortlieb’s waterproof duffle. And remember, a bright color is easier to spot on the luggage carousel!
Daypack
A lightweight approx. 10 – 20 liter daypack is highly recommended. We prefer those without too many exterior pockets to minimize the chances of pick-pocketing. Choose one that fits your travel documents, camera, phone, binoculars, water bottle and a waterproof jacket. And a waterproof cover is also a good idea.
Osprey and Patagonia make great choices in a range of sizes and fits. We like the Talon 11 and Tempest 9 and the Terravia, which is available in several sizes.
Clothing
Layers are your friend when traveling. We recommend bringing several short and long-sleeved shirts or t-shirts in lightweight fabric, shorts or light trousers and comfortable walking shoes for the day-to-day. You can add a sweatshirt in the early mornings and cooler evenings (a silk or cotton scarf is also great) and a breathable waterproof jacket in wet weather. If you feel like dressing up a little for dinner, a shirt or dress is perfect, though there is almost never a need for a tie or high heels, which can be safely left at home!
Your trip might include activities such as cycling or kayaking. As a one off you won’t need any specialist gear, but if they’re a big feature on your itinerary then you’ll want to bring suitable clothing.
Gorilla tracking
Trekking into the mountains to see gorillas is one of the most extraordinary experiences of a lifetime. For this you’ll need to pack a few specifics to protect you from the jungle vegetation: sturdy walking boots, thick socks and trousers, a long-sleeved top and waterproof jacket, and a pair of gloves. As you’ll be walking shortly after dawn and at higher altitude, it will be cooler at the start.
Medication
We strongly suggest that you bring any medication you require. While some medications are available and we carry a First Aid kit, you are likely to be traveling in rural Africa where services are limited.
Your trip
What you need (and want) will depend on your itinerary and time of travel and, if you’re unsure, our team is always happy to advise.
The main thing to remember is to bring what you need to feel comfortable whether you’re exploring the food markets of Addis Ababa, on safari in Uganda or tracking mountain gorillas in the Virunga mountains.
