Against a truly magnificent natural backdrop, Ethiopia boasts the highest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Africa, the ancient Tewahedo Ethiopian Orthodox Church, culinary traditions stretching back over 3,000 years and a jostling, lively capital of Addis Ababa.
The crown jewel for many visitors are the almost mythical rock-hewn churches of Lalibela. Natural wonders range from the Erta Ale volcano, the jagged Simien Mountains and the Bale Mountains’ habitat diversity.
Often overlooked is Ethiopia’s true immensity, which is roughly equal to the landmass of Spain and France together. From vast highland plateaus to the Great Rift Valley and one of the hottest, lowest places on the planet – the Danakil Depression – this rugged land is home to both endemic and endangered wildlife and a varied and culturally rich people.
